AP European History 2012 - '13

Welcome to the AP European History blog for Coach A's class at First Presbyterian Day School. Our objectives in this class include learning the history of western civilization from 1450 to the present; developing skills such as critical thinking and analysis; learning to write better essays; and, most importantly, getting the highest score possible on the Advanced Placement exam.

Books and Supplies

This class uses Western Civilization as its textbook. While there are many good textbooks used by European history classes, this is the most widely used and does the best job of covering all aspects of history. You must have this book with you in class each day along with a large (AT LEAST 3") three ring binder with loose-leaf paper, dividers (at least 12), pencil, and black pen. We NEVER use composition notebooks nor paper torn from them in this class.

Work and Grading System

Each unit will consist of 2 chapters with several reading assignments given in each chapter. Students are expected to take notes on the reading assignments and may use these notes when quizzed on the assignments. These quizzes along with review assignments will constitute daily grades. A major test will be given at the end of each unit and there will be 2 to 3 major tests per grading period. Major tests will consist of 65 - 75 multiple choice questions given one day and an essay or DBQ given the next day. All questions are formatted like those on the AP exam itself. Each student is also expected to have all of his/her tools for class each day, and he/she must also participate actively in class discussion and question and answer. For this preparation and participation, the student receives a class participation grade each grading period. In computing the grading period average, daily grades count 30%, major grades count 60%, and participation is 10%. The fourth grading period the grading scale changes and these changes will be announced at the start of 4th grading period.
